mission
Kimono Club is a social organization started by a group of friends living in Japantown, San Jose, California who were interested in learning more about how to wear, style, and adapt kimonos for everyday fashion. We are an inclusive group of people who come from a variety of backgrounds, ethnicities, genders, orientations, and social groups. We believe that education about kimono fashion and styling should be available to anyone interested in learning more, and that kimono-wearing is one way to promote the wonderful community of Japantown, San Jose— one of the last three remaining historic Japantowns in the U.S.
what we do
We use photography, reading discussions, and workshops to learn more about the art of kimono styling. By wearing kimonos and yukatas, we forge a link to our past and to the surrounding community of Japantown. Unfortunately, many lovely kimonos and yukatas are left to languish in closets when they aren’t being worn for events. By liberating these wonderful garments from storage, we hope to put a smile on the faces of those around us and to bring attention to the unique community spirit embodied by our friends in J-town!
Whenever possible, we aim to showcase local artists, murals, and cultural events. Please let us know if you would like more information about the art, artists, or outfits you see featured in our photos.
